Jordan Week: A Recap

I got the idea to write about Jordan for the entire week just from hearing and reading all the conversations about him last weekend as he turned 50.

Even though he’s retired for many years now, if you follow basketball, it’s almost as if he’s never left. Whether it’s the highlights that still dominate our television screens (or is it YouTube channels now), or how his name gets mentioned whenever someone in our era does something special, whether it’s for one night, one season, or ten seasons.

Below, I’ve collected all my writing in one place. I hope you take the time to read one, read all, or read some of them. If I had to choose — and I don’t have to, but I will — I would say that these are the favorite pieces I’ve written since starting the blog. Maybe not the best — that’s for someone else to judge — but definitely the most enjoyable, most fluid pieces of writing I’ve done.

A lot of times, I think we write about sports to tackle the stories that exist within the cracks. The not to glamorous and lesser known stories. The rise and fall. The what could’ve been.

Jordan was none of that. He was the greatest. And writing about greatness is hard. But even within his story, there is so much material to tackle. Stories to tell. Memories to share. Quotes to dissect.

I think I’ll have another Jordan Week sometime soon.

By the way, watch this Ahmad Rashad interview with Jordan that aired on NBA TV last week. Great stuff. Someone confirm for me that Jordan really did smoke a cigar in his car driving to an NBA game, and I wasn’t just imagining it.

Enjoy the pieces below.

I’m taking the rest of the month off to spend sometime on a book project I’ve been working on that’s very much in progress. If you want to keep up with the details of that, follow me on Twitter here, or like my Facebook fan page. The blog will return in March.
