Dream Team Interlude1: Backup Yacht

The original Dream Team were a dominating team on the court, and a spectacle off it.

While in Barcelona during the ‘92 Olympics, everyone — from the casual fan to the highest celebrities — wanted to be in the presence of Michael, Magic, Larry and the boys.

It was reported that Michael Douglas, who at the time was coming off the success of Basic Instinct, wanted to entertain the team, but the guys politely declined.

One offer that they didn’t pass up on was spending an afternoon on Miami Heat owner Micky Arison’s yacht.

When the team arrived, they were told that the air conditioning wasn’t working. The solution? Arison would bring over his other yacht.

Which led Magic Johnson to quip:

“That was a valuable day for me, a lesson in life. The difference between being rich and being wealthy. The man had a backup yacht. I never forgot that.”

Footnotes:

I’m working my way through Jack McCallum’s “Dream Team” book this month. These interludes are tidbits and facts mentioned in passing in the book that deserve its own spotlight.
