Dream Team Interlude1: Love Of The Game

When Jerry Krause succeeded Rod Thorn as general manager of the Chicago Bulls in 1985, he reviewed Michael Jordan’s contract and noticed an addendum to the terms: a “love of the game” clause.

The clause allowed Jordan to play any basketball game, anywhere, at anytime without reprecussions to his contract.

Pick up games, alumni games, charity games. It was an all inclusive condition that Jordan believed was important for him to improve his game during the off-season without fear of losing his contract.

No one has been able to confirm, but many believe that this clause remained effective throughout his entire playing career.

In Jordan’s own words: “I needed to be able to play the game of basketball without consequence.”

Footnotes:

I’m working my way through Jack McCallum’s “Dream Team” book this month. These interludes are tidbits and facts mentioned in passing in the book that deserve its own spotlight.
